Handling and showing your lambs
Shearing for the fair
By the time the fair approaches, you should be comfortable with your lambs as far as handling them. They should be halter broken and use to you.
One of the key points to your lamb is the condition that he is
in. You should be walking your lambs on a daily basis by now. Maybe as much as a
mile in the morning and a mile in the evening. If you have the facilities, you
can vary the exercise a little by running them in a pin or having them pull a
sled with weights on the back of it. Running, Walking and Pulling will each help
develop different types of muscles. If you don’t have the facilities, then keep
up the walking.
Examples of varying exercise routines:
Monday Wednesday Friday. Walk in the morning, Run in the evening
Tue, Thursday Saturday Pull on a sled in the morning, Run in the evening
Sunday………………………. REST.. Go to church and thank the Good Lord !!!
(Running… Run about 15 min or until you see a nice froth on their
mouths)
(Pulling… Pull weights about 100 feet up and 100 feet back twice-Running)
If you have a trimming stand. Put your lambs on an inclined stand
for about 15 min each day and increase it the next week to 30 min….. NEVER LEAVE
YOUR LAMBS WHILE ON THE TRIMMING STAND. Back to

Finish (fat)
Check your lambs for “finish” everyday. Finish is Fat. There
should not be more than 2/10 of an inch of fat on your lambs along the rib cage.
Feeling 2/10 of fat is like feeling the back of your hand. Notice how it feels
when you run your finger on the back of your hand and you feel the bones and
veins? This is how the ribs should feel on your lamb.
If they are carrying to much finish, increase the exercise. If you don’t notice
a difference within a week, call me. Back to Top
Feeding
Approaching fair time, your lambs should be getting between 4 - 5 lbs. of feed
per day.
Feed 1 Lb. Of Pre-show
½ Lb. Of Star-Glow
¼ Lb. Calf Manna
¼ Lb. Of Steam Rolled Barley.
This is per lamb and should be fed twice a day.
If you need to add weight or finish to your lamb add ½ lb. of steam rolled corn
per feeding.
Star Glow is quite expensive. If you don’t
have Star Glow, you might try adding Baked SoyBeans at a rate of 1 to 5. Or a ¼
lb. to the above feed schedule and drop the star glow, and increase the Pre-show
to 1 ¼ pounds.
Star Glow is real high in protein and so is SoyBeans. (Star glow has other
things in it, but at least you will be getting the protein level)
A hand full of hay twice a week for each lamb. Back to

Watering
Start adding electrolytes or “green lights” to the lamb’s water.
These are additives that make it into a “Gator Aid” like drink and during the
hot July days will add some of the minerals back into the lambs. They will also
start drinking less and lose the water bellies that some of them are carrying.

Medicines
Give B12 3 times per week, at a rate of 2 cc’s per lamb. No
withdrawal on b12
Give Bose 3 times per week at a rate of 2 cc’s per lamb. Stop 14 days prior to
fair.
Give Probiason if the lambs stop eating.
Be sure to watch the withdrawal times on the medicines.

Handling and Showing Your Lambs
Practice Handling and Setting up your lambs each day.
Stephen, Teddy and Jason will be coming by your house each Wednesday to help you
learn to show. If you have any questions, just ask them, they know what it takes
to Win.
They are here to help you, use them to their fullest and learn all that you can.
Remember - Your lamb is not a pet !!! When you show your lamb it must brace and
flex its muscles. If it is a pet, it will just stand there and be soft.
A good lamb is only 50% of what it takes to win. The other 50% is care and
showing of the lamb. Be a Winner. Learn to Show your lamb.
SHOW YOUR LAMBS EVERY DAY !!!! Back to

Shearing for the fair:
Bring your lambs to my house the Saturday before the fair starting
at 9:00 am. We will wash, dry and shear your lambs. At that time we will look at
your lambs and give you instruction on feeding and watering them for the last
days before the fair. We will also wash and shear them again on the
day of the show. We will give you a list of the things to bring to the fair
with you.
If you need blankets, halters, green lights, star glow or any
other items, let me know as soon as possible and I will pick them up for you in
Columbus.
We will work with each of you to get your lambs where they need to be come fair
day.
The key is to stay in contact with us and let us know any questions or concerns.
